Black-and-white photograph of Rachel Yanait Ben-Zvi, wife of Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, the second President of the State of Israel – personally inscribed in her handwriting at the lower left: “To Sarah and Yehuda, my dear friends – Rachel, President’s Residence” [Israel, late 1950s].

Rachel Yanait Ben-Zvi [1886–1979] was a writer and educator, trained as an agronomist. A leading figure in the Labor Movement, an active participant in Jewish self-defense during the pre-state period, and a prominent public figure in the State of Israel. She was the wife of Israel’s second president, Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, and was awarded the Israel Prize in 1978 for her special contribution to society and the state.
