The Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition is a Roman Catholic order of nuns, whose members take vows of chastity, poverty, obedience, and communal living. The order was founded by Émilie de Vialar, born to a noble family in Gaillac, France, on September 12, 1797. In 1832, she established a community that became known as the “Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition.” The order began by founding schools across France, later expanding its activity to Algeria, Tunisia, and other countries in the Mediterranean basin. The Sisters of St. Joseph were among the most prominent Christian orders operating in the Land of Israel during the Ottoman period and later under the British Mandate. In the 1850s, the order began operating in the Land of Israel, managing the French Hospital of St. Louis, established by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, and later the French Hospital of St. Louis in Jaffa. The order also founded the St. Joseph Girls’ School in Jaffa, which has long been an integral part of the local landscape. In 1954, they founded St. Joseph Hospital in East Jerusalem. As of 2005, the order included 940 sisters in 154 communities worldwide. Their mission includes youth education and care for the sick and elderly.
