The film’s plot takes place in Nazi Germany (Frankfurt) during the 1930s and depicts a fascinating encounter between a scientist, an opponent of the regime hiding from Nazi persecution, and the “Wandering Jew, ” who unexpectedly arrives at his home, pleading for relief from centuries of suffering by having his memory erased. “I have no friends. Alone, on this earth for nearly two thousand years, I have seen only shadows around me, ” laments the Jew. The scientist succeeds in erasing the historical memory of the Wandering Jew, and for the first time, he feels free and sets out to begin a new life. However, he now finds himself persecuted by an enemy he had never known before—the Nazi Gestapo. Arrested solely for being Jewish, he is deported along with his fellow Jews to a concentration camp. The film vividly portrays the deportation process, closely resembling real Nazi operations, depicting the overcrowding in trains, mass executions of Jews, and the brutal conditions of the camps. Inside the concentration camp, he receives a prisoner number like the rest of his Jewish brethren. As the suffering intensifies, he plans an escape. The Wandering Jew successfully flees the camp and reunites with his fiancée. However, upon learning that the Nazis plan to execute another prisoner in his absence, he returns to the camp, confesses to his ‘crimes, ‘ and is executed by a firing squad. The film’s final scene repeats the curse of the ‘Wandering Jew’, as foretold by the Christian Messiah, emphasizing that the legend has come true regardless, remaining faithful to the age-old anti-Semitic myth.
