Rabbi Chanokh Hendel Friedland, author of Toldot Chanokh, She’elot u-Teshuvot Divrei Dodim, and Divrei Chanokh, was one of the prominent figures in the history of the Chovevei Tzion movement and in the traditional Jewish education system in Russia and the early settlement in Eretz Israel. He was born in the Russian Empire in the mid-19th century and passed away in 1929. A traditional intellectual, Torah scholar, and man of letters, he was deeply active among Eastern European Jewry within the framework of Chovevei Tzion, a movement that fused a love of Torah with a love for Eretz Israel. He served as the representative of the Zionist Union in Paritch and took part in establishing educational institutions in Eretz Israel, particularly during the early waves of immigration (Aliyot). Throughout his work, he collaborated with prominent figures such as Rabbi Shmuel Mohilever, Rabbi Reines, and others who promoted Hebrew education rooted in tradition. He published articles and polemics in the Jewish press, including in Zionist journals of the time. In his later years, he immigrated to Eretz Israel and settled in Jerusalem. He passed away in 1929 and was buried on the Mount of Olives.
