Sefer Ha-Semag by Rabbeinu Moshe Makuchi, Venice [1547], printed in Beit Daniel Bombergi. On the leaflet there is a signed owner’s signature in the handwriting of the Ga’on Rabbi Avraham Bing: “G-o-d also blessed me with this ספר מצות גדול.”
A fancy copy with antique leather binding.
On the title-page there is an additional owner’s from the year 1808.
The Ga’on Rabbi Avraham HaLevi Bing is also known as our teacher Rabbi Avraham Segal Binge [1752-1841], one of the greatest rabbis of German Jewry in the 18th and 19th centuries, rabbi of the state of Würzburg in the Franconia region of Bavaria. At the beginning he learned Torah from the rabbi of the city of Rabbi Avraham Avish of Lissa, but he did most of his studies in the shadow of Kabbalist Rabbi Natan Adler, in which he saw his outstanding teacher. Was “Mara Datara, Av Beit Din, Posk and Rosh Yeshiva. He is a vehement opponent of the extremist and reformist intellectuals. His students included most of the German Rabbis in the eastern Rhine region in the 19th century. And some of them served as rabbis throughout Europe, and one of the leaders of the old Yishuv in Eretz Israel.
