Six Simchat Torah flags – lithographic print on cardboard. Israel, 1940s–1960s. Includes rare designs.
Flags: A flag designed by Zvi Livni – combining Jewish tradition with the cultural ethos of the Land of Israel – members of various ethnic communities in their traditional dress dancing alongside native-born Israelis (Tzabarim) – Eretz Israel, 1940s; a flag depicting a boy with a “Maccabi” emblem on his shirt holding the flag of Israel, and on the other side: children in traditional dress, Moses and Aaron, the Holy Ark, a lion, leopard, deer, and eagle. This flag originally appeared in the 1930s; the present version is an Israeli edition printed in the 1950s (published by A. Zaslansky). This version does not appear in “The Simchat Torah Flags” published by the Israel Museum; “And they shall beat their swords into plowshares…” – a flag with symbols of Israeli national sovereignty – a tank crewman and a navy sailor in IDF uniform against a background of farmers plowing the land and the rising sun with the Tablets of the Law (Israel, 1958);
Children reading from a Torah scroll (on the national flag appear an apple and a candle inspired by the classic Simchat Torah flag) (Israel, 1950); The Four Holy Beasts and a figure with a white beard representing the older generation, while members of the younger generation dance at the foot of a staircase – Israel, 1950s;
A flag depicting children dancing against the background of the Western Wall (1960s).
