Spagna In Flamme Vomini, eventi e orrori dalla caduta della Monarchia ai nostri giorni. 100 foto – Spain in Flames – Events and Atrocities from the Fall of the Monarchy to the Present. 100 Photographs. By C. Boselli, Published by Rizzoli, Milan, 1937. Italian. A rare publication documenting the horrors of fascism in Spain at the outbreak of the Civil War. Extremely rare.

A publication issued in the midst of the Spanish Civil War by the Republican forces, aiming to expose the brutality of General Franco and his supporters against the so-called “conservative” forces in Spain during their campaign to seize control of the country, a process that culminated in 1939 with Francisco Franco’s declaration of victory and the establishment of a fascist regime in Spain. The booklet is accompanied by 100 rare photographs documenting the crimes of the fascists against the Spanish minority from the early 1930s until the time of publication—torture, murder, suffering of the population, looting, and destruction inflicted by Franco’s forces everywhere. Alongside the photographs, the text describes the organizational structure of Spanish fascism and details step by step the fascists’ takeover of power in the country. At the time, the Republican forces believed they would defeat Franco’s army, and the booklet is written in a patriotic tone expressing hope for the downfall of fascism. Toward the end of the booklet, it states: “It is impossible to predict what will happen next, but two things are certain: first, that the socialist and communist forces will be annihilated. Second, that liberalism, which until the fall of the monarchy was a model in intellectual circles, will lose most of its followers.” In reality, two years later, Franco’s forces completed their conquest of Spain, he became a dictatorial ruler, and his country remained under totalitarian control until his death in 1975. The Spanish Civil War was, in essence, a struggle between ideologies—fascism versus socialism/communism—and served as a prelude to World War II, a theme clearly reflected in the harrowing photographs in this booklet, documenting the heavy toll on the Spanish civilians whose only wish was freedom.
