Statement of delegates of the Constituent Assembly. A typewritten note with the final inaugural text of the Constituent Assembly [February 1949] – the final wording.
The Constituent Assembly was the first elected body in the State of Israel, whose function was to establish the constitution of the State of Israel. The assembly was set for election to the Constituent Assembly on January 25, 1949. The Declaration of Independence stipulated that the Constituent Assembly would establish a constitution for the state by October 1, 1948, under which the “elected and regular authorities of the state” would be established. In fact, the Assembly first convened in February 14, 1949, and within only two days decided to change its designation from a constituent assembly to a legislature called “The Knesset.”
