“Tachkemoni” Torah Room. Memorial Booklet on the Occasion of the Twentieth Anniversary of Its Establishment (1909-1929). Published for the Dedication Day of the Institution’s Covenant. Jerusalem, 1929. Accompanied by group photographs of the teachers and students of the school across different cohorts, as well as photos of school activities, illustrations, and tables. Rare.
This rare booklet was published to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the “Tachkemoni” school in Jerusalem. The Tachkemoni school in Jerusalem was founded in 1909 on Ethiopia Street, initiated by religious intellectuals who sought to impart “Torah with Derech Eretz, ” a combination of traditional values with modern science and Zionist ideas. This was about two years after the first Tachkemoni school was established in the city of Jaffa. The booklet before us narrates the history of the school, which began with 25 students divided into two classes. These were the first classes in Eretz Israel where the Talmud was taught in Hebrew, and it was the first and only educational institution in Jerusalem that was founded and funded by a community of parents at their own expense.
The booklet details the struggles the institution faced from its very first day, both financially and ideologically, due to the opposition it encountered from the Haredi community in Jerusalem. It recounts the numerous times the school was on the verge of closing, but thanks to the determination of its teachers, it continued to exist. The booklet also reviews the development of the various departments that were opened at the school, the student orchestra, the student newspaper, craft studies, the school theater, the establishment of the “Tachkemoni Scouts” battalion, the bulletin “Chaverenu” published by the students, and more.
