Testimonies of Ukraine “Stalin’s Christianity” – A rare antisemitic publication during World War II. Serbian.
This publication takes the form of a dialogue between two individuals exchanging views on Stalin’s attitude towards religion and communism’s relationship with Orthodoxy in general, while expressing disdain and defiance against Judaism. Through their conversation, the claim emerges that communism and religion are like fire and water, and that only when communism is defeated will there be true religious freedom. Communism aspires to create a kingdom of happiness on earth, while religion seeks the Kingdom of Heaven—”one who aspires to the Kingdom of Heaven cannot be attached to material aspirations for a kingdom of happiness on earth.” The dialogue describes how communism persecutes religion, mentioning “many mass graves in Venice of hundreds of people who were killed just because they prayed to G-d.” Within the conversation, the absurd antisemitic claim is made that due to uncompromising Jewish influence on religious observance, Christians were forced to embrace heresy to escape communist persecution. The text also describes the desecration of graves by Bolsheviks who built buildings from gravestones, among other things.
