Eszter Konyve – ORTHODOX ZSIDÓ NÉPASZTAL EGYESÜLET Budapest – The Book of Esther with Hungarian translation on facing pages. Published by the Jewish People’s Association for the Aid of Immigrants from Germany following the Nazi persecutions. Budapest, 1935. Rare.
At the beginning of the book appears a statement from the association, addressing the difficult time facing the Jewish people, with countless immigrants pouring into Budapest seeking aid: “…For in the struggles of life, let us hurry to the aid of those who have fainted and grown weary of life. Widows, orphans, the elderly, the bankrupt, the unemployed, the large number of immigrants from Germany, as well as other stateless individuals, our fellow believers in detention centers and their families, make up the great number of our regular beneficiaries. For this great mission of ours, we ask for your generous support so that our noble and sacred work may be carried out as broadly as possible…”. Also included are photographs of needy Jews receiving aid from the association, described as: “Families taking lunch home” and “The association’s dining hall.” Additionally, a page lists the names of the association’s board of directors.
In the early 1930s, the Jews of Hungary still enjoyed the civil equality granted to them under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which enabled them to assist their brethren who had immigrated from Germany following the Nazi persecutions. However, shortly thereafter, even in Hungary itself, calm did not prevail, and the anti-Jewish policies of the authorities led to a deterioration in the condition of the Jews toward the end of the decade. Extremely rare scroll.
