Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, published by Karni, printed by Davar Press. Tel Aviv, 1953 – first Hebrew edition, translated by S. Schnitzer.
First Hebrew edition of The Diary of Anne Frank, translated by S. Schnitzer, published six years after the original Dutch edition appeared in 1947. The Hebrew edition presented here was printed in a limited number of copies and distributed as a gift to subscribers of the newspaper Davar HaShavua. Shortly after its release, the diary gained wide acclaim among Israeli readers and was reprinted in numerous editions across the country.
Anne Frank’s diary, originally written in Dutch, is based on the personal journal she kept while in hiding with her family from the Nazi regime, in the secret annex of a house in Amsterdam during the Holocaust, between 1942 and 1944. The diary, published after the war by Anne’s father, Otto Frank, is considered the most widely read personal account of the Holocaust and has become an international bestseller that has maintained its status for decades. According to the Anne Frank House Museum, the book has sold over 33 million copies in 75 languages (as of 2010). It holds two additional distinctions: it is the best-selling book ever written in Dutch, and the best-selling personal diary of all time. The book is consistently listed among the most important works of the twentieth century.
