A rare photo montage of first-class students and teachers in the Nordia gymnasium. Tel Aviv 1930. The montage painting by Ze’ev Navon. [Who was the painting teacher at the school, the brother of the first cartoonist in the Yishuv – Aryeh Navon] Photographer: Meir G”h [?]

The portraits of teachers and alumni are combined with a painting of a magnificent building, which is starred in the Star of David; At the top of the building, rays of light are sent. In the center, the gymnasium symbol, which includes a drawing of books and various study aids. The teammates, lower right: d. Lachman (Secretary), S.Har. Z. Navon, S.A. Schreier [later “Shrira” – the author and researcher, one of the founders of the “Tarbut” educational network in Ukraine, served on the gymnasium’s management and in the late 1930s, after a crisis that befell the institution, remains its sole director), Dr. Moshe Rigai [Man of the Jewish Battalions], Engineer J. Wincor, Dr. A. Efrat, S. Kafkafli, J. Hilel.

This class of only 12 students was in fact the first class to graduate the gymnasium founded on Yehuda Halevi Street, three years earlier in 1927 as a “Gymnasium for the People” by a group of teachers and engineers, under the ‘Cooperative Teachers’ Cooperative Association. In 1929, the parents of the students decided to change the name to “Nordia” gymnasium after Dr. Max Nordau. The purpose of the founders was to enable parents whose means are limited to providing their children with a full secondary education, and was the third institute in Tel Aviv, after the Herzliya and the Geulna gymnasium. Graduates of the gymnasium acquired both a realistic and humane education, and the success of the institution did not fail to come – many of its students were published as key figures in the history of the Jewish community in Israel. At the end of their studies, they served in the Jewish Brigade, and included journalists, writers, editors, engineers, and more.
