An extremely virulent antisemitic publication that attempts to substantiate sweeping and severe claims against Jews through a selective interpretation of the Talmud and Jewish belief. Originally written by Flavien Brenier de Saint-Christo and translated into Russian in Paris by Dmitry Mikhailovich Grabbe: “A particularly perceptive man, he immediately understood the full danger inherent in Freemasonry and in Jewry, and devoted the final years of his life to the struggle against this terrible evil” (from the book).
The book seeks to establish a “scholarly” antisemitic thesis according to which the Talmud reflects a separate and closed normative system, with codes favoring the Jewish people that allegedly stand in opposition to general society. To this end, the author compiles translated excerpts from the Talmud (at times mediated through secondary sources) and presents them as proof of a hostile Jewish attitude toward non-Jews and of an alleged aspiration for economic and social domination. The argument is constructed cumulatively: isolated passages are detached from their original context and presented as representing a “general spirit, ” moving from textual presentation to broad political conclusions. The work also incorporates a conspiratorial dimension: an attempt to link this interpretation of the Talmud to contemporary developments – press, finance, and European politics – and to present them as part of a supposed Jewish network of influence aimed at world domination: “How could those whose ancestors received the Ten Commandments of the covenant of love and justice at Sinai replace them with the law of hatred, murder, and robbery that guides them today and is called the Talmud? This is all that seems necessary for us to clarify before proceeding, using the most reliable sources, to the study of the Talmud itself and the implications arising from the acceptance of its doctrine… We shall attempt to explain how the corruption of Israel occurred, what fertile ground this corruption found in the tribal characteristics inherent in the Jewish people, and what political motives compelled the Jews to betray their destiny, leading them first to deicide and subsequently to an ancient and age-old struggle against Christianity. In this way, we shall obtain the key to explaining the enigma around which world politics has revolved for two thousand years…”. (from the introduction).
Like other racist writings circulated at the time, this book also grounds its accusations against Jews in racial theory, asserting that: “the racial characteristics inherent in the Jews contributed to their religious corruption, ” and claiming that the Jew constitutes a “threat to civilization” and is the source of all the world’s ills. In the “Conclusion of the book, ” the author states his declared purpose in disseminating this antisemitic publication: “Even in France at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Jews faithfully observed the most despicable precepts of the Talmud, and rabbinic authority has lost none of its power…. Should we then be surprised by the moral corruption and material destruction that the Jewish people spread around us? In dedicating this study to the sect of the Pharisees and to its moral law, the Talmud, we did not intend to preach a savage hatred against the Jewish race. This is far from our intentions. We wished to point out the harmful foundations of Judaism, to clarify their causes, and we have reached the conclusion that the Jew, before being a villain, is a victim poisoned by the secret sect of the Pharisees; he is imbued with its venom, and for twenty centuries he has poured this poison over the entire universe. Consequently, we have taken up arms… against the Jew as the Talmud has made him into this supreme embodiment of Pharisaic thought, against the Jew – deicide, liar, thief, and murderer. May this brief work help us to understand the Jew as he is and to judge him according to his merits.”
