La Nouvelle Voix d’Alsace et Lorraine – The periodical of the “Militant Christians” group – “The New Voice of Alsace and Lorraine” – Antisemitic issue from June 4, 1938 – Dealing with Jewish control in the United States – “The Jews in the United States are the true masters of the country” and invoking the antisemitic forgery “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion”.
The newspaper’s headline: “Les Juifs aux Etats-Unis” – The Jews in the United States. The main article on the title page is dedicated to the old accusation of global Jewish control – this time in the United States. The writer claims that in fact there is no real threat from Hitler towards the Jews, and it is the Jews in the US who spread rumors in newspapers that such a danger exists in order to portray themselves as persecuted and solidify their power in the US and gain all industrial, commercial, financial and academic positions. He further claims that Jews are inherently communist and proves this via the fact that ten years prior they founded the Jewish Russian town of Birobidzhan, and that the Jewish press calls on Soviet Russia to accept refugees from Germany, and also by the claim that the Jewish press does not condemn Russian Bolshevism. Under the subtitle “Jewish Madness” the writer claims one should not take seriously the outcry of American Jewry in the face of the Nazi enemy and its warnings, because they do so in order to create an artificial crisis and strengthen their power.
An amazing historical detail exposed in the issue before us is the fact that in 1938 the libel of the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” was still in daily use. In one article under the title “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” it is written that in the Bern trial the Jewish claim that the “Protocols” are a historical forgery was rejected, and it refers the reader to a booklet published by De Pris in which he tries to show that the court ruling did not accept the Jewish claim that the Protocols are a literary forgery. “It is good that this pamphlet was published in Switzerland, a country where Jewry tried to disguise its deeds”, it says – needless to say this is an entirely false claim, since that trial proved the lies of the antisemitic propaganda of the “Protocols”, the court ruled they are a forgery and prohibited their distribution in Switzerland. This fact did not prevent the newspaper from directing its readers to De Pris’s pamphlet of lies. Another article accuses the Jews of distributing forbidden teaching materials in schools and spreading sexual permissiveness.
This issue was published about three months after Germany’s invasion of Austria, and several months before the outbreak of World War II and the establishment of the death camps. Even at that time world Jewry, which did everything to protect itself from the real danger of Nazism, was accused of populism, conspiracy, and intention to achieve imperialist goals.
The newspaper was a mouthpiece for the organization “Militant Christians” which in attacking the Jews combined the old historical claims of traditional antisemitism with the new antisemitism which made use of racial theory.
