The Land That Is Desolate An Account Of A Tour In Palestine- By Sir Frederick Treves – a travel book to the Land of Israel accompanied by 43 photographs from special angles, taken by the author in the Land of Israel, and a folded map of the Land of Israel [39×28 cm]. London, 1912 – first edition.
The author visited the country as part of the massive influx that led many travelers to Palestine at the beginning of the 20th century. The book contains detailed descriptions of many cities in the Land of Israel – Jaffa, Haifa, Tiberias, the Dead Sea region, with the city of Jerusalem in the center. The book features, among other things, a rare photograph of the train from Jerusalem to Jaffa. In Jerusalem the author went up to the Al Aqsa Mosque and went down to the lowest underground caves in the region. In addition, the author describes the wide variety of the inhabitants of the Land of Israel with their various communities and clothing. He describes the severe poverty of the inhabitants alongside the renewal of the land with new construction and new immigrants. One of the first publications that brought high quality photographs from Palestine.
