Three issues of “Shaari Zion” (the “Gates of Zion”) magazine, Les Portes De Sion, “a periodical letter that will announce and inform all the things that are happening in all parts of the world in general and the Holy Land in particular”, edited by Rabbi Yitzhak Gashtsinani and Haim Press. Year 1879. Months: Iyer, Kislev, Tevet.

In the issues before us is an article about Moses Montefiore and his contribution to building in Jerusalem, and articles about the suffering the people of Zion who sigh and groan in poverty, cold and disease, and more.

The magazine “Shaari Zion” was published in Jerusalem in the years 1876-1885, with a varying frequency of once a week and once every two weeks. In some issues of the first year, the journal was printed in Hebrew and Yiddish, column by column. At some point, the printing of the Yiddish part was stopped. The newspaper included reports on events in the Jewish world and in the Land of Israel, in particular in Jerusalem, announced the death of important rabbis, and sometimes issued a ‘call for help’ to the residents of the Holy City. Until the beginning of the 18th century, the newspaper was printed in the Agan press and the well-known printer, one of the first printers in Jerusalem, Yitzhak Gashtsinani.
