A rare issue of Ha’aretz – Second Edition – September 6, 1972 – the day the massacre took place in Munich, mistakenly announcing that: “The Israelis have been released – the battle with the terrorists is over.” The issue was published a few hours after the bloody event that claimed the lives of 11 members of the Israeli delegation to the Olympics, and unintentionally misled the country’s residents with good news that had nothing to do the sad reality. Rare.
The title page of the Ha’aretz issue, which relied on misinformation received from the Bavarian Interior Minister, read: “At 3 a.m., the Bavarian Interior Minister announced here that the battle with the ropes had ended and that years of them had been captured. At the time of reporting, only one thing is clear, that all nine Israeli hostages were released unharmed. ”
In another article, which also appears on the title page, it is written about only two people who were murdered: “Mr. Inbar said that the delegation would return to Israel with the coffins of the deceased – Moshe Weinberg and Yosef Romano ZL … When the information is provided, the arrival of the liberated Israelis is expected here.”
Complete sheet. Good condition.
Attached: Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper from that day, September 6, which announces the bitter and true news: “9 hostages killed …” with pictures of the nine murdered men who were initially taken hostage.
The massacre of athletes at the Munich Olympics was a Palestinian terrorist incident that took place on September 5-6, 1972, during the 20th Olympics held in Munich, West Germany. During the event, 11 members of the delegation: athletes, coaches and judges, members of the Israeli Olympic delegation, were killed by Palestinian terrorists from the “Black September” organization. Moshe Weinberg and Yosef Romano were killed inside the Israeli delegation’s residence in the Olympic Village while the terrorists took over the members of the delegation – about whom the Ha’aretz newspaper was reported correct. The other nine were held hostage for about 19 hours and murdered during a failed rescue attempt by Bavarian police forces at an airport near the city. During the rescue attempt, one and five German policemen out of the eight terrorists were also killed. About these nine the Ha’aretz newspaper referred in its wrong headline that they had been released and the battle with the terrorists was over.
