A large photograph showing Jews who were forced to clean the sidewalk on which there were slogans expressing support for the independence of Austria, with its occupation by the Nazis (Anschluss). All around, Nazi soldiers and the people of Vienna mock the Jews in the act of humiliation. Vienna, March 1938. Keystone Press photo agency ink stamp on back.

Immediately after the Anschluss (Nazi Germany’s invasion and occupation of Austria), Vienna’s Jews were forced to wash pro-independence slogans from the city’s sidewalks. After the annexation, the attack on the Jewish population in Austria was swift and terrifyingly violent.

Size: 25×21 cm. Very good condition.
