A PESZACH HAGADA Izrael Egyiptomból való kivonulásának elbeszélése – Illustrated Passover Haggadah with Hungarian translation, published by ORTHODOX ZSIDÓ NÉPASZTAL YESÜLET – The Orthodox Jewish People’s Association for Jewish emigrants from Nazi persecution. Budapest, 1930s. Hebrew and Hungarian page by page. Rare.
The opening of the Haggadah features a photograph of the members of “The Orthodox Jewish People’s Association” at the Passover Seder, and a statement by the Orthodox Jewish People’s Association about the assistance activities of the association for emigrants from Germany following Nazi persecution: “…in the struggles of life, let us hasten to help people who have fainted and are weary of life. Widows, orphans, the elderly, bankrupt, unemployed, the large number of German immigrants, as well as other stateless people, our believers in detention centers and their families constitute the large number of our permanent beneficiaries. For this great task of ours, we ask for your generous support so that our noble and holy work will be carried out as widely as possible…”. On the last page there is another photograph showing needy Jews receiving assistance from the association, described as: “Families taking food home”. And also a page with the names of the board of directors of the association.
In the early 1930s, Hungarian Jews enjoyed the equality of rights granted to them under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and thus were able to assist their brothers who immigrated from Germany following Nazi persecution. But after a short time, the calm was not preserved in Hungary itself, and the anti-Jewish tendency of the authorities led to the deterioration of the situation of the Jews towards the end of the 1930s.
Extremely rare Haggadah. Only one listing in the World Cat library catalog.
