Les Triangles Rouges – “The Red Triangles, ” by the writer, journalist, and Belgian prisoner Omer Habaru – A Heart-Wrenching Account of Life in the Nazi Death Camps. Published by J. Fasbender, Arlon (Belgium) 1946 – First Edition – A Copy Dedicated and Signed by the Author. French.
Habaru documents the horrors he endured as a political prisoner in the Nazi concentration camps of Wichte, Oranienburg, Sachsenhausen, Ravensbrück, and Buchenwald. Habaru, born in 1893 in Saint-Mard, Belgium, was an active journalist and writer. During the war, due to his activities against the Nazi occupation, he was arrested and sent to concentration camps, where he recorded the daily events. Among other things, Habaru recounts the stories of other Belgian prisoners who were arrested and detained with him in the camps, including Jews and even young boys. He provides detailed descriptions of the terrible abuse suffered by the prisoners, the malnutrition, the unbearable living conditions, the Nazis’ attempts to strip the prisoners of their humanity, and, on the other hand, the prisoners’ struggle to survive and maintain their humanity. Among the accounts, he describes the fate of a Ravensbrück prisoner named “Lili” and how she survived the inferno despite all the torture she endured. Habaru published his experiences in this book shortly after his release.
The book received recognition and acclaim, and in 1956, it was awarded the Prix Interallié de la Résistance. In 1974, Habaru published an updated version of the book under the title Les Triangles Rouges Racontent: Récits Concentrationnaires, in which he expanded on his wartime experiences and insights. He passed away in May 1977.
