Frauen-Warte die einzige parteiamtliche Frauenzeitschrift Einzelpreis. – Frauen-Warte – “Women’s Guard” – ‘The Only Official Women’s Magazine of the Party’ Featuring Venomous Antisemitic Articles and Antisemitic Caricatures in the Largest Women’s Publication in Nazi Germany. Leipzig, 1944. German.
An issue focusing on the German woman’s contribution to the war effort and the social challenges in Germany opens with “The Real Problem” – the Jews. The first article, titled “The Jews in World Criticism, ” attempts to argue that Germany did not invent antisemitism and that hatred of Jews is an age-old fact: “In all times and among all nations, the Jewish question has been one of the most prominent subjects of political caricature. The Jew has always been portrayed as a force that destroys nations, a parasite on his host nations. Thus, it is not the case, as is so often claimed abroad, that the Jewish question was only uncovered by National Socialism. Political caricatures throughout the centuries—from antisemitic woodcuts to modern times—brand the two driving forces of Judaism: money and gender…”. The article quotes antisemitic statements from 19th-century German philosophers, such as: “Jews deal only in money, gold, jewelry, and old clothes; they have contributed nothing in terms of real wealth.” It then leads to the conclusion: “This series of testimonies could be extended indefinitely… Germany will never again become the domain of the Jewish spirit. What great minds around the world have recognized for centuries must become reality. This realization is the goal and mission of the future… A new order is emerging, supported by the will of the masses, free from Jewish rule…”. The article is accompanied by antisemitic caricatures published throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries to “prove” that Germany did not invent antisemitism. Among them are the famous Rothschild caricature depicting him clutching the globe, Erich Schilling’s illustrations of Jews profiting from the blood of nations, The Jewish Breakfast, and others. Further in the issue, another antisemitic article describes how Jews allegedly exploit the German economy for their benefit and work to undermine the nations in which they reside. This article includes supposed quotes from Jewish figures about the Jewish intent to take over the world and is accompanied by contrasting images: a German soldier on the battlefield and “productive” German women. Additionally, the issue contains articles on Nazi Germany’s training programs for women in various social and economic roles. The cover features a photograph of working German women with the caption: “They Want to Contribute to Victory.”
Frauen-Warte was the official magazine of the Nazi Women’s Organization (NS-Frauenschaft) and served as a key propaganda tool for promoting Nazi ideology among women. Published between 1931 and 1945, it was primarily distributed to German women. The magazine featured articles on a wide range of topics, including child-rearing, the role of women in the family, recipes, fashion, and political propaganda. The title Frauen-Warte, meaning “Women’s Watch”, can be interpreted as “Observation Post” or “Guard Duty, ” emphasizing the role and position of women as defined by Nazi ideology.
