Third grade’ reading – A book to learn the language and the spelling by J. Weingarten, Warsaw – Tel Aviv 1935 – Publication for Poland – The book was printed in Warsaw during Nazi rule after Hitler came to power about four years before its conquest by the Nazis – rich content for children about immigration to Eretz Israel, and pioneering. Paintings by H. Melerwitz. From the last books printed in Warsaw before the war. Rare.
In the third grade textbook, Weingarten deliberately included many passages dealing with immigration to Eretz Israel and life in Eretz Israel, in order to instill in young children the longing for Eretz Israel and the desire to immigrate, while the waves of anti-Semitism in Warsaw itself were already well felt. For example, there are excerpts about: On Rosh Chodesh the blue box is emptied – the redemption box, Remember the produce of the land of israel, Happy New Year greetings to the children of Eretz Israel, Dad works in Eretz Israel, a day in memory of Bialik who died a year before printing, Working Eretz Israel, Tu B’Shvat in Eretz Israel, a letter from Eretz Israel, songs from the pioneers, the hero Yosef Trumpeldor, Purim in Tel Aviv, the ship “Poland” transporting immigrants to Eretz Israel, the Herzl Forest in Jerusalem, the lighting in Meron on Lag B’Omer, the song of the reapers, and more.
