Three issues of the Parisian magazine “Le Rire” – “The Laughter” – featuring anti-Semitic covers. The covers depict grotesque illustrations of Jews with long noses controlling the French economy through deceit and scheming.

Issues:

November 10, 1900: (The bleeding forehead of the Jew anticipating the failure of others).

January 8, 1916: (On the cover, the famous caricature by C. Leandre depicting “The Kings of Magic and Their Gifts” in the form of a rooster composed of Jewish heads – an illustration that appeared later on the famous anti-Semitic postcard).

February 15, 1936: (A caricature of a Jewish father reading a financial newspaper with his son, Jacob, beside him, as the father is puzzled that the boy is still playing with toy soldiers).

Le Rire, a French humor magazine, was published from October 1894 to April 1971. The magazine regularly featured illustrations by some of France’s most renowned artists on the front and back covers, as well as in the middle pages. Among the illustrators were Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Georges Goursat, Lucien Métivet, Jean-Louis Forain, Adolphe Willette, Joaquín Xaudaró, and others. During the 1930s, the magazine adopted an increasingly antisemitic tone, sometimes overt and other times subtle, portraying Jews as wealthy individuals profiting at the expense of French citizens.

Complete issues. Slight tears along the edges of some pages. Overall condition: Good.
