The Normandy Invasion (code name: “Operation Overlord”) was an amphibious invasion by the Western Allied armies on the beaches of Normandy in occupied France, which took place from June 6, 1944, to June 30, 1944, as part of the Western Front in World War II. On the first day of the invasion, approximately 156,000 Allied soldiers landed on Normandy soil by sea and air, supported by about 12,000 aircraft and 6,939 ships. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The Normandy Invasion marks the opening of a second front in the war against Germany and the beginning of the end of Nazi Germany.
