Three rare Simchat Torah flags. Israel, 1950s.
Children of different ethnic backgrounds holding Simchat Torah flags. Lithography on cardboard. On the right, a Yemeni child with sidelocks and traditional attire, on the left, Israeli children in Hebrew Scouts uniforms. In the center, an elderly, dignified Jew lifting the Torah scroll, with a large Star of David containing smaller Stars of David, and an Ark of the Covenant with doors that ‘open’ to reveal three Torah scrolls. A later paper version of this flag from the 1960s, printed by A. Zaslansky, is known, but this is the earlier version, printed on cardboard in the 1950s.
A child wearing a shirt with the symbol of the “Maccabi” organization holds the Israeli flag, while on the other side, children in traditional attire are depicted, as well as Moses and Aaron, the Ark of the Covenant, a lion, a leopard, a deer, and an eagle. The original flag dates back to the 1930s. This is an Israeli version printed in the 1950s (published by A. Zaslansky). This version does not appear in the collection “The Simchat Torah Flags.” lithographic print on cardboard. A small tear at the bottom of the flag.
‘וכתתו חרבותם לאתים וחניתותיהם למזמרות’ – A soldier from the Armored Corps alongside a Navy soldier, with a farmer plowing his field in the background, and symbols of the IDF expressing Israeli sovereignty at the top. Lithographic print on cardboard – 1958.
