TILL ORIENTEN – “To the East – Travel Report” by Karin and Frank Mangs – The Mangs couple travel book to Eretz Israel, accompanied by rare photographs taken by the two, with a chapter documenting the days they passed through Nazi Vienna on their way to Eretz Israel. Stockholm 1938 – dedicated copy by the authors. Swedish.
Description of the Mangs’ journey to Eretz Israel and North Africa in 1938 with photographs they took – “Thanks to the camera and diary we managed to preserve a significant part of the changing impressions across three continents”. Unlike known photo books of Eretz Israel using common pictures of the American Colony and other photographers, all photos in the book before us were taken by the Mangs couple themselves, published here for the first time. Some chapters written by Ms. Mangs, the rest by both. The two visited during the Arab riots and couldn’t access some key sites like the Jewish Quarter which was blocked by the police, But despite this, they made efforts and managed to reach the tense areas and take pictures there as well. In the series of photographs after page 48 appears the famous image of Dalmatian women hiding their faces from the camera.
On their way to Eretz Israel, the couple passed through the streets of Vienna during an SS parade, and were present when Hitler’s car drove by them and during a speech by Adolf Hitler and Goebbels. An entire chapter is devoted to their time in Nazi Vienna, their impressions of the massive street parades, and the anti-Semitic phenomena they encountered everywhere.
