Advertisement Postcard for Hans Günther’s “Racial Science of the German People.” Germany, 1920s.
On the front of the postcard is a photograph of an Aryan girl along with a quote from the newspaper “Westdeutscher Observer”:
“Today, anyone who wants to express an opinion on German matters must understand the principles of racial science. They must know what Germany is. They must know how the German race and the finest tribes coexist, and they must be familiar with the physical and mental characteristics of the individual races, and they must know about the importance of race.” The text continues: “The scientific and fundamental work that began the racial idea in Germany: ‘Racial Knowledge of the German People’ by Prof. Dr. Hans F.K. Günther, with details about the book, which includes 100 illustrations, diagrams, and maps.” There is also a quote praising the book: “No work in Germany has shaken the conscience of the German people on racial issues like this one and strengthened the responsibility towards the racial heritage like Günther’s Racial Science.” The back of the postcard provides details about the bookstore-café in Munich where the book could be obtained.
Hans Friedrich Karl Günther [1891-1968] was a key figure in the development of National Socialist racial ideology and one of the primary proponents of German racial theory in Germany. Günther wrote his major popular work, Racial Science of the German People, over two years, from 1920 to 1922—a venomous publication aimed at moving the theory of Aryan superiority from the theoretical level to practical application. Adolf Hitler himself was the official owner of this publication, and the first three editions were dedicated to him. In the third edition from 1923, it was written: “To the successful champion of German racial thought”; the 1928 edition was sent with “Christmas greetings”; and in the 14th edition of 1930, Hitler was described as the “pioneer of racial thought.”
