An admission ticket from September 6th – the day after the massacre – on a day when athletic competitions were scheduled, but the Olympic Games were halted due to the murder of 11 Israeli athletes by Palestinian terrorists from the “Black September” organization. Instead of the athletic competitions that were supposed to take place on September 6th, a memorial ceremony for the victims was held.
An admission ticket to the handball games that took place two days later on September 7th, when the Olympic Committee decided to resume the games despite the anger from Israel and the international community that this decision provoked.
The Munich Olympic massacre was a Palestinian terrorist attack that occurred on September 5–6, 1972, during the 20th Olympic Games held in Munich, West Germany. During the event, eleven members of the Israeli delegation—athletes, coaches, and referees—were murdered by Palestinian terrorists from the “Black September” organization. On the date indicated on the ticket before us (the day after the murder), Israeli athlete Esther Roth-Shachamarov, who lived in a building not reached by the terrorists, was supposed to participate in the 100-meter hurdles semifinals and hoped to advance to the final, after previously placing fifth in the 100-meter dash semifinals, missing the final by 0.04 seconds. Instead of competing, she followed the coffin of her coach, Amitzur Shapira. Following the tragic event, the International Olympic Committee decided to hold a memorial ceremony for the victims at the Olympic Stadium, and then resume the competitions according to the schedule 24 hours after they were halted. Tickets for the games held afterward were sold as usual. This controversial decision sparked widespread anger and criticism, questioning how the Olympic Games could continue in a venue where such a tragic event had occurred just a day before. Members of the Israeli delegation flew back to Israel immediately after the memorial ceremony, accompanied by the ten coffins of the murdered athletes, which were laid to rest in state ceremonies attended by many mourners.
