Two rare means of payment in denominations of 1 and 2 marks 1943 from the Dachau concentration camp.
On their front the inscription Dachau 1943 – on their back a Star of David. The word Erbreichschacht apparently refers to a specific area in the camp.
The banknotes were issued by the Nazi regime for use by prisoners within the Dachau concentration camp. The internal banknotes were intended to control economic transactions and restrict the ability of prisoners to trade or hold real currency, thereby reducing the risk of escape and illegal trade with guards. Dachau, established in 1933, was one of the first concentration camps set up by the Nazis and was the first to use “camp money”.
