The maps depict characteristic wildlife and landscapes of the cities Tobruk, El Alamein, Benghazi, and Cape Bon (Tunisia), where the British Eighth Army pushed back Nazi forces during World War II.

The unit was established in September 1941 as part of the British effort to confront Axis forces in the North African theater. It included soldiers from several Commonwealth nations (Britain, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, and others) as well as troops from Free France, Poland, and other allied countries. The Eighth Army achieved notable victories against Nazi forces in: The Battle of Tobruk (1941), The First and Second Battles of El Alamein (1942), Operation Torch

The liberation of Tunisia in 1943, which marked the end of the North African campaign.
