Photograph depicting patrons of the Eliach Soup Kitchen during a meal in the sukkah of “Beit HaTavshil Eliach.” Photographer: Tzadok Bassan (signed in the plate at lower right). Mounted on cardboard, with a photograph affixed to the back showing recommendations given to Rabbi Eliach for his institutions. Jerusalem, 1920s.

Rabbi Shlomo Yosef Eliach [1860–1941] was a rabbi, emissary (shadar), and man of kindness who organized the support of American Jewry for the residents of the Old Yishuv in Eretz Israel during the 19th century. He was the founder and director of the General Soup Kitchen and Guesthouse in Jerusalem and Hebron. In 1920, he established the General Soup Kitchen and Guesthouse in the Mea Shearim neighborhood of Jerusalem, which came to be known universally as “Beit HaTavshil VeHachnasat Orchim Eliach” in his honor. At the time, this institution was one of the primary food initiatives serving the Old Yishuv of Jerusalem. It was sustained largely through philanthropic donations from abroad and provided affordable meals to many in need—including Jewish prisoners, to whom Rabbi Eliach devoted special attention for many years. The institution also operated low-cost sleeping quarters for pilgrims and visitors to the city. The soup kitchen and guesthouse operated year-round, though their activity was especially prominent during the holidays. Rabbi Eliach continued to run the institution well into his 80s. After his passing, the institution was managed by his grandchildren.

22×16 cm. Filing holes at the lower edge of the photograph. Good condition.
