A richly illustrated volume containing 150 important photographs of Jerusalem and its surroundings by the author, documenting his journey through the Holy Land and along the routes leading to Jerusalem at the close of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. Many of the photographs appeared here for the first time and are not known from any other source. The volume also includes numerous illustrations depicting the Jews of Jerusalem from its various communities in their traditional dress, the Temple Mount and the Western Wall, the approaches to Jerusalem, bustling marketplaces in late nineteenth-century Jerusalem, landscape photographs taken from unusual vantage points, and much more. A large number of the photographs are full-page plates, while the remainder are integrated into the text. The text includes important quotations by notable figures concerning the Land of Israel and its future.
