Victory edition of The Daily Intelligencer Journal – dated May 8, 1945, headline: “WORLD AWAITING V-E DAY AS GERMANY SURRENDERS” – “The world awaits V-E Day as Germany surrenders.” Pennsylvania.
At the top of the front page appears a themed illustration: an eagle stands atop a gravestone burying Nazi Germany beneath it, with a German Wehrmacht cap placed on the stone. Subheadings include: King George sends congratulations to General Eisenhower; Churchill to announce the historic conquest this morning at 9:00; simultaneous declarations expected from President Truman and Prime Minister Stalin; and: “Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allies on Monday, completing the victory in the European phase of World War II, the most destructive in history.” One of the inner pages features portraits of 50 “Army Leaders Who Fought the Reich”, commanders of the Allied forces alongside detailed photographs of the weaponry used by the Allies to defeat the Nazi enemy, and more.
The Lancaster Intelligencer was founded in 1794 and, in the 1930s, merged with the Lancaster Journal to become the Intelligencer Journal. It was published in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and considered a leading paper in Lancaster County and the area known as the “Garden Spot of America.” During World War II, the newspaper reported from the front lines via AP and UP wire services. It published casualty lists, letters from soldiers in active service (including their photos and personal stories), and daily updates on military developments in Europe, often accompanied by maps and military expert analyses printed on the front pages.
