WALKS IN AND AROUND JERUSALEM By James Edward Hanauer – a book of photographs following the author’s journey in and around Jerusalem. Published by Church Mission to Jews, London, 1926.

Author James (John) Edward Hannover (1850-1938), photographer and canon of St. George’s Cathedral in Jerusalem. A descendant of Swiss and Jewish ancestors, was born in Jaffa in Ottoman Syria at the time and moved to Jerusalem at a young age. And from his childhood he did not cease to explore its treasures, over the years he accumulated vast knowledge about the buildings of the city, and even indirectly became acquainted with the diverse traditions about each and every place. Was involved in the Palestine Research Fund, and received high-quality photographic equipment relative to the period in order to document his tours. A significant portion of the book is devoted to synagogues, and to the holy buildings in Jerusalem, with an extensive review of how the Jews purchased buildings in the city when they arrived there after the expulsion from Spain. A large part of his collection of photographs appears in the book before us which was first published in 1910, and appeared in a second and expanded edition in the 1926 edition before us.
