According to custom, the first time a child entered the synagogue at the age of one or three years, a short ceremony was held in which the garment in which it was wrapped at birth was donated as a gift to the synagogue. The custom was first mentioned in the book Minhagei Maharil in 1545 and was actually practiced in Germany, the regions of Bohemia and Moravia, Switzerland and Denmark, until the 19th century.
