Wine Label from the Winery of Yaakov Haberfeld in Oświęcim – Auschwitz, Poland, C. 1900. Rare.
At the top, an ornate Star of David and an inscription in Yiddish: “שבת בראנפין ריינעס אניסקארן דעסטילאט יאקאב האבערפעלד שפיריטוס רא פפינעריע אונד ליקער זאמפף פאבריק אשוויענציס” – “Shabbos Brandy” (Brandy Traditionally Consumed on Shabbat) – Pure Yaakov Haberfeld, Alcohol and Liquor Factory, Oświęcim”.
The Haberfeld factory was established in the early 19th century as a liquor production plant near the fortress and synagogue. It became one of the city’s defining landmarks throughout the 19th century. The business remained under the management of the Haberfeld family until World War II. Some family members fled Poland at the onset of the war and reached the United States, while those who remained perished in the nearby Auschwitz concentration camp.
