“Al HaChomot” (“On the walls) – The National Military Organization in the 1948 Battles for Jerusalem by Yehoshua Ofir, Published by the Jabotinsky Institute, Tel Aviv, 1961. A dedicated copy signed by Menachem Begin: “B’Binyan Tzion. Begin” and by the author: “With best wishes, Y. Ofir.”
An important publication about the Jerusalem saga during the War of Independence, the loss of the Old City in May 1948, and the heroic deeds of the Irgun fighters in their battle against the Arab gangs and invading Arab forces. The author, a native of Jerusalem with deep roots in the city’s life from his childhood, was a soldier in the Irgun, both in the underground and when he emerged to fight against the Arab enemy. In addition to his own firsthand experiences, the author brings testimonies from dozens of fighters from all three military organizations—the Irgun, Lehi, and the Haganah—who participated in the battles as commanders and soldiers. The book also includes classified documents found at the Jabotinsky Institute concerning the failure that led to the fall of the Old City. The work is accompanied by maps and photographs.
