Yellow Cloth Badge , with the inscription JOOD - "Jew" - Yellow Badge of Dutch Jews in the holocaust. Netherlands, early 1940s.

The order instructing Dutch Jews to wear an identification mark was issued on April 29, 1942, after the "first LiRo order" [De eerste LiRo verordening] was issued in August 1941 to confiscate Jewish property. The obligation to wear the yellow star began on May 4, 1942, shortly before the deportation of Jews to the extermination camps in Eastern Europe began in the summer of 1942. The badge, a yellow Star of David with the word "Jood" ("Jew" in Dutch) in the center, was ordered to be sewn onto the clothes of Jews on the left side of the chest, at heart level, so that it would be prominently visible to the public. Jews caught without the badge were sentenced to six weeks in prison.

9x10 cm. Stains. Condition Good.
