Zayit Ra’anan – Commentaries, novellæ, and glosses on Yalkut Shimoni, by the renowned Gaon Rabbi Avraham Abele Gombiner, author of Magen Avraham. Dessau, 1704 – First edition. Ownership inscriptions on the title page.
Zayit Ra’anan is the most fundamental and significant commentary on Yalkut Shimoni. At the beginning of the book is a section of sermons from his work Shemen Sasson on the Torah. Many of Rabbi Avraham Abele’s writings were lost, and only a few survived – most notably his famous commentary on Orach Chaim in the Shulchan Aruch, as well as his commentary on the Tosefta for Nezikin (it is possible he wrote commentary on the entire Tosefta, but only this section has survived), which is today printed alongside the Tosefta under the name Magen Avraham. Also preserved is this work – the Zayit Ra’anan commentary on Yalkut Shimoni.
The renowned Gaon Rabbi Avraham Abele HaLevi Gombiner (1637–1682) was one of the great Acharonim. He is known primarily by his work Magen Avraham, one of the principal commentaries on the Orach Chaim section of the Shulchan Aruch.
