"Every two or three weeks, with trumpets and military music, German propaganda proclaims the "final victory" over Russia and the complete annihilation of the Soviets as a military power... Never during any of the offensives of 1940 did there seem to be a need to promise such wonderful new victories... Why did Goebbels continuously blow these trumpets during the last three months? Why did he compel every leading journalist in Europe to follow him? Why did Hitler personally return from the battle he himself was directing to touch on the same subject and reinforce the boasting?
Because the enormous losses of blood and life suffered on the Russian front, without leading to truly decisive results, have shaken the morale of the German people and are destroying their childish faith in the Führer's infallibility... The losses can no longer be concealed. The ridiculously low loss figures officially published no longer deceive even the most credulous Germans. The story of the endless and fruitless massacre permeates every German town and village.
History knows no example of such a deliberate massacre of youth, of a people, for the sake of a single individual, a bloodthirsty monster suffering from delusions of grandeur, relying on terror and the dissemination of catchy publicity legends.
...There is a gratifying side to Hitler's criminal folly for all the enemies of Nazi Germany... because when you look at the situation in the right light, one can be thankful that this Germany is ruled by Hitler and the Nazis. For perhaps no other system could have aroused in this people the fanatical spirit and the terror that now drive the youth of an entire nation to senseless slaughter.
No other ruler but Hitler could have destroyed so surely and so thoroughly the male population of Germany and with it one of its most important sources of strength. Germany is bleeding to death. And Hitler is the great executioner of his people. His murderous work will be of great importance for the final destruction of Germany's armies. It will also help to ensure that the consequences of that defeat will be lasting and salutary, for it will help to neutralize German militarism, that scourge of humanity once and for all and all freedom loving peoples of the world can say: Hitler, we thank you!"
