In 1864-65 a survey of Jerusalem was conducted by the British engineer Charles Wilson (the survey summary appeared in three magnificent volumes). The photographer of the delegation was James McDonald who photographed the view of the Temple Mount and its surroundings, the Western Wall, and the wall area, as well as some panoramic photographs. In 1868 McDonald set out with a delegation to Sinai, where he took about 150 more photographs.
