A photograph showing IDF Chief of Staff Moshe Dayan in a Gafir uniform (to the left), in his 20s, next to a friend. Signed on the back with Dayan's signature.
After the events of 1936-1939, the British Mandate authorities agreed to establish the Hebrew Local Police, which was composed of members of the Haganah organization. After serving briefly as a guide in the British Army, Dayan enlisted in the Hebrew Local Police. In December 1937 he was a trainee in a platoon commanders course, where he instructed Yitzhak Sadeh, and among his trainees was Yigal Alon. From 1938 to 1939 he was a member of the "Plugot HaSadeh" commanded by Sadeh and the "special night squads" commanded by Wingate. In these settings he learned the basics of offensive combat theory, which served him throughout his military career. During this period the photo before us was taken.
