Published by PHILO G. M. B. H., JÜDISCHER BUCHVERLAG BERLIN - Philo Jewish Publishing House, Berlin, 1938. The publishing company of the atlas, which was Jewish-owned, was closed by Nazi order a month after the publication of the guide before us!

Rare and important publication which was published in October 1938 about two weeks before the outbreak of Kristallnacht (November 9-10, 1938) and was intended to urgently assist Jewish immigrants fleeing Germany following the antisemitic persecution. The guide includes a list of countries of the world in alphabetical order in the format of the well-known "Philo Atlases" except that here, as written in the introduction: "The Jewish immigration movement of our time has completely changed Jewish life and has given Jewish social work a much expanded field of activity. The individual Jew faces tasks and decisions that require a great amount of additional general and Jewish knowledge. The Philo-Atlas is intended to help answer countless new questions that have arisen - information for the immigrant, a guide for the immigrant, and connecting people outside and here...". In each entry dealing with a country or city, the atlas provides urgent information about possible arrival options to countries on which the life and survival of Jews depended at that time. Which countries accept immigrants, how much money is required to immigrate to those countries, what professions are in demand in each country and the conditions of benefits according to the various professions (for example, in the first entry "Afghanistan" it is written: "Only individual, particularly skilled workers in the handicraft professions may find housing), what diseases one should prepare for according to the different regions, where local Jewish aid organizations can be found that may assist immigrants, and much more informative knowledge for the Jewish immigrant.

For example, the entries in which the most detailed information appears are those dealing with Palestine and the United States as the two preferred destination countries for Jews. In addition to the informative details, the atlas elaborates on the national idea shaped by Herzl and Ahad Ha'am in the 19th century, and emphasizes the fact that the Zionist movement prefers Palestine as the "immigration center" over any other country, and details all the documents required for the immigrant coming to Palestine. A breakdown of the daily wage by types of work in Palestine is shown, the activities of the Jewish Agency are described, the numerical ratio between Jews and Arabs, a great deal of informative information about educational institutions in the country, the most important agricultural Moshavot, and more. In the entry on the city of Jaffa it is written: "Since the 1929 riots there has been an immigration to neighboring Tel Aviv, training workshops for certified craftsmen...". Moreover, in the letter J entry there is a special entry that is not a country name dealing with Judisches Leben in der Welt - Jewish life in the world. This entry deals with the pogroms that took place against Jews from the end of the 19th century and presents the United States as the best refuge for Jews.

The Philo Verlag company, which was Jewish owned, was forcibly closed by the Nazis a month after the publication of the guide before us. At the same time, the decision was made to ban all emigration of Jews from the territory of Germany, even to countries that were willing to absorb them in accordance with the decisions made at the Evian Conference earlier that summer. The Jews who remained in Germany were now quite trapped.

The atlas includes 20 color maps of countries and regions around the world, including a map of Palestine and a regional map of the Middle East, a world map showing distances from Berlin to five continents, a map of the United States, Australia, and more.

6, 284 p. + 20 color map plates. Original cloth covered cardboard binding. Minor stains on the cloth jacket. Overall good condition.
