The City of Hope Jewish Relief Society was established in Los Angeles, California in 1913 to raise money to build a free clinic for people from all over the United States who were diagnosed with tuberculosis. For this purpose, the association purchased 10 dunams of land in Duarte, California, and established a convalescent home in its territory, which was called the "City of Hope." For over 30 years, the organization treated tuberculosis patients until after World War II, when antibiotics for tuberculosis were developed. In the following years, the convalescent home treated and developed a cure for cancer.
