The camp was one of two transit camps set up by the Nazis in the Netherlands for the deportation of Dutch Jews to concentration and extermination camps in the east. Its location was adjacent to the small village of Storbeck in the region of Drenthe, on the German-Dutch border. It began to function as a transit camp on July 1, 1942, after the Germans occupied the Netherlands. [Anne Frank stayed in the camp between August 7 and September 3, 1944, before she was sent to Auschwitz].
