Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Evondale [1864-1892] The eldest son of Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) and of Alexandra, Princess of Wales. In 1891 Prince Albert sought to marry Princess Mary, and engagements were considered between the prince and the princess. Queen Victoria supported these engagements and the wedding was scheduled for February 27, 1892. During the preparations for the wedding, Prince Albert contracted the flu (1889–1892 there was a pandemic (a global flu pandemic) known as the "Russian flu"). The flu developed into pneumonia and the prince died at Sandringham House in Norfolk on 14 January 1892, a week after his 28th birthday. The special lament before us was composed by the Jewish community after hearing about his sudden death.
