A group photograph of members of the Sixth Local Council in Petah Tikva in the 56th year to the founding of the colony. Was given to the Council member Moshe Ginzburg as Award for appreciation of his work. Signed by the chairman of the local council, Shlomo Stampfer, and the secretary. 7/27/1934. Photographer Alhaznes, Petah Tikva.

In 1934, the Jewish Agency requested that Petah Tikva be a city, but the proposal met with opposition from Petah Tikva agricultural representatives from the civilian bloc, led by Moshe Smilansky, president of the Farmers' Association, who feared that the coup would endanger Petah Tikva and all colonies. On the other hand, the five workers' representatives, Shlomo Yitzhak Stampfer and the ultra-Orthodox representative Monk, supported the decision, but they remained in the minority. Thus, the colony remained managed by the local council for another 3 years, until finally, Petah Tikva was granted city status in 1937, about three years after Tel Aviv, making it the second Hebrew settlement to receive this status. The first mayor was Shlomo Stampfer, the son of the colony's founder.

Size: 31x24 cm. Slight crack across the photo. Good condition.
