"Extermination of Polish Jews - Album of Pictures" , published by the Central Jewish Historical Committee in Poland, Lodz, 1945. Hebrew, Polish, Russian, English, French, and Yiddish. An early photo album documenting the atrocities of the Nazis in stages. One of the most important visual publications ever published documenting the Nazi atrocities and the extermination of European Jewry immediately after they occurred - the album, published in Lodz at the end of the war, contains 252 difficult to view black and white photographs (on 104 plates) showing the destruction of Eastern European Jewry in its various stages - persecutions with the entry of the Nazis into Poland, antisemitic propaganda, segregation of Jews, humiliation and torture in the ghettos, deportation to camps, and extermination in the death camps. Many of the photographs in the album were found with the Germans themselves. They were photographed at the crime scenes and later handed over to private photographers for development. The Germans warned about the return and copying of the photo plates, but the photographers, knowing the danger involved, risked themselves and kept copies, and thus they were preserved. "Apart from the "spontaneous" riots, the burning of synagogues, enslavement, forced labor accompanied by beatings and severe torture, and so on - the Germans tried to humiliate the Jews in the eyes of the non-Jewish masses, gradually accustoming them to the idea that the Jew is outside all law and justice, his life is abandoned property and his blood is permitted" (From the introduction). At the end of the album are pictures documenting "The Life and Activity of Guerilla Detachments" and life after the liberation. The pictures are accompanied by an introduction by Gershon Taffet and a short text by Dr. Phillip Friedman briefly presenting the Holocaust documentation project, of which the album is a part. On the last pages are detailed explanations in Polish and English about the pictures in the album and their origin. Worn cover, detached. Detached leaves. Stains on some of the album's leaves.
