Dismissal document and letter of recommendation given to the Jewish woman Mrs. Roza Dolezal who worked as a cleaner at the Jewish nursing home ALTERSHEIM DER ISRAELITISCHEN KULTUSGEMEINDE in Vienna for 26 years! As part of the official decree on the closure of Jewish nursing homes in Vienna during its conquest by the Nazis. July, 1940.

Dismissal document given to the Jewish woman Mrs. Roza Dolezal on July 12, 1940 by the nursing home of the Israelite Cultural Community: "Due to the official decree issued to the Jewish Community of Vienna, I hereby terminate your employment relationship as of July 31, 1940; on this day, your employment relationship should end. With regard to your future work assignment, you will be referred to the responsible office of the German Labor Front and the employment office in accordance with the guidelines given". and the handwritten signature of the administrative manager.

On the day Roza finished her work about two weeks after receiving the dismissal letter, on July 31, 1940, she was given a letter of recommendation from the administrative manager so that she could perhaps find work at another institution: "I certify that Mrs. Roza Dolezal, resident of Vienna, XX, Jägerstrasse 26, worked as a cleaner at the nursing home of the Jewish Community of Vienna, 9., Seegasse 9 from May 25, 1914 to July 31, 1940. Mrs. Roza Dolezal is an especially diligent, careful and very good worker with extensive practical knowledge, which she always managed to use correctly and appropriately in all official tasks. She carried out the services entrusted to her with great care, so that both the management of the institution and the residents were satisfied in every respect. I must especially mention her great sense of duty, and her exemplary quality work. I can warmly recommend Mrs. Roza Dolezal, who is retiring from the service of the nursing home by official order... and I wish her all the best for her future life". With the ink stamp of the nursing home, and the handwritten signature of the administrative manager.

The dismissal of Jews from nursing homes was part of the broader antisemitic policy implemented by the Nazis after the Anschluss (the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938), as stated in the dismissal document, that the instruction is given "due to the official decree issued to the Jewish community in Vienna". Jewish residents were deprived of their rights, property and livelihoods. According to the "emigration plan" for Jews administered by Adolf Eichmann, Jewish workers who had worked for years at a workplace were suddenly dismissed without prior notice. In the second phase, the Jews were forced to fill out "emigration forms". The two documents before us were issued at the height of the antisemitic persecution in Austria, it was after the Nuremberg Laws had already come into force on May 20 of the previous year in Austria, and after the ban on Jews entering public parks, and the ban on Jewish doctors treating non-Jews, had already come into effect.

[2] leaves. Typewritten, and handwritten signature. Stains on the recommendation document. Overall good condition.
